Before the game Kim Newton liked his chances, and his instincts proved to be right. In a superb outing, the Squids pitcher whitewashed the Monument Swans. Newton said in the clubhouse afterward, "I just had a feeling it was going to be my day. My control was awesome. I could throw my curveball even when I was behind in the count." The Pittsburgh twirler held Monument scoreless, gave up 1 hits, struck out 4, and issued 2 bases on balls.
"We didn't have very many good at bats," the Swans manager said in his postgame interview. "When that happens, you usually lose."

Cincinnati pitcher Carlos Sarante gave the Monument Swans fits today as he blanked them on 1 hits. He registered 6 strikeouts and 2 bases on balls in the shutout. His manager commented, "When he's locating his pitches, he becomes unpredictable. He had Monument guessing the entire game."
