You
can view copies of the original manifests from the voyages of the Garlasco
family. A ship manifest is available for almost all members of the
Garlasco family, and many have multiple manifests available. Each time a
person would enter Ellis Island, there was a written record, and some family
members traveled back and forth between Italy and the U.S. as they went to Italy
to get other family members.
Viewing the manifests gives you a real
appreciation for the scope of the migration. Many of the people list their
hometown as Fubine, the origin of the Garlasco family. And among those
names are the names of other families that would eventually marry into the
Garlasco family, names like Longo, Robotti, Samarotto, and others. Most
sailed from Le Havre, France, including the Rodeschini family from which my
Grandmother came. But no matter where they departed from, they all came to
New York City.
Not all records are entry from
Italy. Albino made several voyages to Cuba during his years as a race car
driver for Cadillac, and he brought his wife with him and even had a daughter
born in Cuba.
The manifests are large graphic files
in the .gif format. You can view them in your web browser, but I recommend
that you save them to your hard drive, open them in an image editor, and print
them. They are very large so that you can see all of the detail. The
data in the manifests vary, but most include the name, age, sex, and
origin. The early manifests are all hand-written, but later they are
typed. I hope you will enjoy seeing this part of our family's history.
*Please note: The manifests were
written by clerks in the 1920s as the passengers gave their names
verbally. This resulted in numerous spelling errors that require some
interpretation. There are a number of times people are called GARLASKO or
some other form of the name.
*Please note: An asterisk between the
name and age represents an unknown Garlasco. Please let me know if you
have any information about this person. All names in ITALICS are
know family of Battista Garlasco and Maddalena Robboti.
Click on the ship name to view the
manifest. If the name is not highlighted, no manifest is available at this
time, but I will later add the passenger record.
